Natural Remedies for Chronic Fatigue & Epstein Barr Virus

Posted by Administrator on 10/15/2012

What Causes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown and multiple triggers may be involved.  Those who have a history of chronic viral infection such as Epstein-Barr, human herpes virus 6 and cytomegalovirus could be more at risk of developing CFS.  Immune dysfunction and hormonal imbalances, such as an undiagnosed thyroid condition could also be a related factor in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, as well as stress, nutrient deficiency, and toxins.*

Alternative Treatments for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Although medication may be prescribed to address the various symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, there is currently no known conventional treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome, which is why many people seek complementary and alternative treatments, such as homeopathy (see remedies below).*

Diet for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Health begins with diet.  Those who suffer from any type of chronic health condition should take two things into consideration:

Hidden food intolerances and a proper and balanced diet.  Many people who have strange symptoms and chronic ill health can trace their symptoms back to a hidden food intolerance.  The most common foods that trigger an autoimmune response are wheat, gluten, corn, soy and dairy.  Other possible food intolerances are citrus, nuts and shellfish. The best way to find and weed out the food or foods that might be causing your symptoms is to do an elimination diet. For one week, cut out all the above mentioned foods from your diet.  The next week, reintroduce one new food each day and note how you're feeling.  When you find the culprit food or foods, you'll know and be able to eliminate them for good.*

Pre-packaged and processed foods are chocked full of chemicals and additives such as aspartame, food dyes and high fructose corn syrup, which only make chronic fatigue syndrome worse.  Cut these from your diet immediately.  When choosing meat and dairy products, go for organic. The antibiotics and growth hormones in meat and dairy products are not meant for human consumption despite reports to the contrary.  In addition to organic meat and dairy, add a variety of organic vegetables, fruits and whole grains to your diet.*

Vitamins and Minerals for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Many vitamins and minerals are useful in the treatment and prevention of fatigue.  While a high nutrient diet plays an important role in combating fatigue, you may get the best therapeutic results by adding supplements to boost the level of these nutrients.*

Vitamin A - This nutrient helps protect the body against invasion of pathogens such as viruses (which might trigger chronic fatigue syndrome).  Vitamin A enhances the immune system by increasing T-cell activity.  These are important cells that help to fight infectious disease.  Because Vitamin A is needed for normal production of red blood cells, it helps prevent fatigue caused by anemia.  Vitamin A also helps control the tiredness caused by anemia that occurs with heavy menstrual bleeding.*

Vitamin B Complex - B vitamins are water soluble and are not stored in the body.  They are easily lost when under stress or eating unhealthy food, including coffee, cola drinks, and other caffeine containing beverages.  Fatigue and depression can result from the depletion of B vitamins.  B complex is needed for normal growth and maturation of red blood cells.  Their deficiency leads to anemia and fatigue.*

Vitamin C - This an extremely important nutrient for fatigue.  By supporting immune function, vitamin C helps prevent fatigue caused by infections.  Vitamin C is an important anti-stress vitamin, needed for the production of sufficient adrenal gland hormones. Healthy adrenal function helps prevent fatigue and exhaustion in individuals who are under physical or emotional stress.  In individuals with iron deficiency anemia, vitamin C increases the absorption of iron from the digestive tract.*

Bioflavonoids - They help protect us from fatigue caused by allergic reactions because their anti-inflammatory properties help prevent the production and release of compounds such as histamine and leukotrienes that promote inflammation.*

Magnesium and Malic Acid - Combinations of these two supplements are very important for the maintenance of energy and vitality.  Magnesium is required for the production of ATP, the end product of the conversion of food to usable energy by the body's cells.  Malic acid is extracted from apples and is also an important component in the production of ATP.  Another form of magnesium has been researched for the treatment of fatigue called magnesium aspartate, formed by combining magnesium with aspartic acid.  Aspartic acid also plays an important role in the production of energy in the body and helps transport magnesium and potassium into the cells.*
